Ornamental Research

Ornamental plant production and maintenance is the fastest growing segment of the agricultural sector in the state of Utah. Ornamental trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants are critical to the ecology of urban areas and provide grace and beauty to commercial and home landscapes. The focus of the Utah State University ornamental research program is to identify and evaluate plant production and management systems that result in more efficient use of resources like water and nutrients. We are also interested in the ecology and physiology of these plants, and the effects of environmental stresses on their ability to survive and thrive in constructed landscapes. Our research encompasses both native and non-native adapted species with the ultimate goal of increasing landscape diversity and reducing production inputs.
