Family  Compositae (Sunflower Family - Eupatorium Tribe)

 

Description
Narrow, dotted leaves, 4 inches basally, getting smaller as they go up the stem. Stems are topped by a 6 inch spike of lavender blooms. Blooms last from 2 - 4 weeks.

Range
Mid-grass prairie plant, north into Canada and south to Texas. Elevation: 5,000 - 8,000ft.

Culture
Prefers adverse soil conditions (i.e. gravelly, infertile, shallow).

Value
Not only does Liatris have a very attractive flower, but the overall refined texture of the plant is also a landscape asset. Reasonably common in the trade.

Propagation
Easily seeded or transplanted. Sow seed directly onto container or in the desired location fall or spring. Cover with ¼" soil. Germinates well. Does not bloom first year.
