Common Name     Buckwheat

Family           Polygonaceae (Buckwheat Family)

 

Description
Scooped leaves with hairy undersides. Flowers borne on tall stalks 4 to 12 inches tall.

Range
Occurs throughout the intermountain west. Elevation: to treeline.

Culture
Rocky, well drained soils. Hardy in zones 3 - 8.

Value
Many different species, all with good landscape qualities of low stature, attractive flowers, E. umbellatum having bright yellow flowers, and flower that turns reddish in the fall or when drought stressed. Woody base keeps interesting shape even during the winter. Combined with good drought tolerance, a lot of very good species for the landscape.

Propagation
To start seed indoors, soak seed 5 hours in gibberillic acid 1:500ppm with water. Rinse and sow onto soil. Cover to depth. Other methods are to let seeds self-spread from mature plant or division depending on the species.
