Holodiscus dumosus
Occurs throughout the intermountain west, north to Wyoming and south to Mexico. Elevation: 5,500 - 10,000ft. Prefers rocky, steep soils. Like many species in this family, Holodiscus grows out of rock cracks, but is only moderately drought tolerant. The flowers add an interesting texture but the creamy color is short lived turning to an rather ugly brown. Has orangish-red fall color. Uncommon in trade. Germinates well from fresh seed. Sow seed onto soil in container and cover to depth. For seed older than one year cold treat for 90 cover to depth. To sow outdoors in desired location sprinkle a plentiful amount of seed and cover with ¼" of soil. Fall sowing is recommended for this method. ) |
