Fraxinus anomala
Common Name Singleleaf Ash
Family Oleaceae (Olive Family)

Description

This plant can be used as a shrub or a small tree. It gains heights of 2.5-4 meters. It is usually multistemmed from the base. The leaves are ovate, 1.5-6.5 cm long and 1-6 cm wide.

Range

This tree is found along drainages or rimrocks, usually occurring at elevations of 4,000-6,000 feet. Found from northern Arizona to southwest Colorado and southern Utah.

Culture

Well drained acidic soils. Found in canyons and hillsides.

Value

The only single-leaved ash, the leaves are leathery with an interesting shape, but can be disfigured from fungal leaf spot; has value in being a relentlessly tough and drought tolerant tree that provides a nice vertical contrast in the low water landscape.

Propagation

The seed of Fraxinus anomola seed can be started indoors by using a 90 to 120 day cold treatment. Be careful that the seed does not get too moist as it will rot easily. Sow into container and cover to depth. Because this seed varies from season to season and collection site locations, individual seed lots vary in germination rates and length of cold treatment time. Observation for emergence of radicals (a small root) in the cold treated seed is helpful. Sow seed when 5% of seed has radicals. To start outdoors sow seed in the desired location in the fall and cover with ¼" of soil. Seed may germinate over several years. May also be done from cuttings.

A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.
