Description

This perennial shrub can reach heights of up to 10 feet. Forestria will bloom before setting its grayish-green oval leaves. Small ornamental black berries form in the fall and drop from the trees. Its wood is extremely hard and has been used by Native American tribes as tools.

Range

Throughout the intermountain west, west into California. Elevation: 3,000 - 7,000ft.

Culture

Prefers river valleys and cliffs.

Value

A pleasingly drought tolerant large shrub, small tree that has upright bright green foliage that contrasts beautifully with the black bark of one-year old wood.

Propagation

Cuttings from hardwood or layering. To start indoors cold treat for 30 to 90 days. If visible germination occurs in cold treatment sow when there are at least 10 or more seed showing radicals (a small root emerging from the seed). Cover to depth. To start outdoors sow in the fall in desired location and cover with ¼" of soil and water in. Germination will be seen the following spring.
