Fallugia paradoxa

Common Name Apache Plume

Family Rosaceae (Rose Family)

Description Probably the most distinguishing and attractive feature of the Apache Plume is the feathery, red-pink seedheads that come on the plant after flowering. These seedheads can remain all season long. A close relative of Cliffrose, both plants bear similar, deeply lobed small leaves.

Range:

Occurs throughout the intermountain west. Elevation: 3,500 - 8,000ft.

Culture:

Likes dry slopes and washes.

Value:

One of the few shrubs that produces cute white flowers all season, but is a tremendous eye-catcher with copious clusters of pinkish plumes attached to the seeds on top of being very drought tolerant. A superior shrub.

Propagation:

Seeds can be sown at any time. Cuttings are also an option. These plants re-seed prolifically, so digging seedlings is another source of planting material. To start seed indoors sow seed in container and cover to depth. After seed has germinated in 10 to 20 days be careful not to over water. These seedlings are very susceptible to fungus and may rot. Once they have their true leaves water thoroughly only when the surface of the soil has started to dry out. Transplant as soon as they are well rooted.

A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.
